As students demonstrate stronger retrieval, gradually remove those supports—fade them—so they’re confidently pulling information from memory with less help. Importantly, all students should have access to the same set of prompts, just at different levels of difficulty or support, so practice is equitable and supports ongoing growth.

This approach is preferable because it respects varying levels of prior knowledge and cognitive load. It helps students who are still consolidating facts or connections to practice retrieval without becoming overwhelmed, while still offering rigorous challenges for those ready to push deeper. In contrast, giving identical prompts to everyone ignores readiness and can either frustrate beginners or bore advanced students. Providing no scaffolds would leave some learners without the necessary supports to retrieve effectively, which can hinder the development of retrieval fluency.
